Being Earth-friendly in 2020
Published on
The start of a new year is always a good time for setting out resolutions for the time ahead. With that in mind, I decided to set out some intentions for this year (and beyond).
My big goal in 2020 is to be kinder to the planet. Living in a more eco-friendly, sustainable way is something I've had in my sights for some time now, but in 2020 I want to make sure I really focus my attention and energy on it. This includes:
- Being sure to invest time and effort on more sustainable practices.
- Working towards living a more plastic-free lifestyle, with natural and sustainable materials.
- Being more intentional about purchases and activities, avoiding consumption just for the sake of it.
- Reducing waste by adopting zero-waste practices.
I've been working towards these goals for a little while now with steps like composting at home, trying to buy more eco-friendly products, and being part of the environmental working party at work. However this year I really want to kick it up a gear and make it central to life, rather than just making occasional changes around the periphery. In relation to the environmental footprint of waste, becoming truly zero waste is almost certainly not something that'll be achievable (yet?) but the idea is not to be perfect, but to make progress in the right direction.
Another goal is to spend more time in nature, enjoying and appreciating it. It's too easy to get sucked in to the hustle and bustle of everyday life and take the natural world for granted, but it's important to appreciate and be mindful of the the natural beauty which surrounds us. Getting out in nature regularly is definitely something I want to keep up with, even if it's only for a short walk.
The year, and following through with these intentions, is kicked off with taking part in Veganuary. It's not something I might have considered a few years ago but it's impossible to deny that meat production has a significant impact on our planet, so trying to make changes there can only be positive. So far, part way through the month, I feel it's going really well and I'm enjoying the process of exploring new options.
I'll try to post occasional updates here on my website and also over on Instagram so if you're interested, feel free to follow along.
